Build your CV step by step

Six essentials for a stronger CV

Work through these practical checks before sending your next application.

  1. Start with clear contact details

Use your name, town or city, phone number, professional email address and a relevant LinkedIn or portfolio link.

  2. Write a tailored profile

In three to five lines, explain your experience, strongest relevant skills, target role and the value you can offer.

  3. Support skills with evidence

Do not only list skills. Give short, truthful examples showing where you used each skill and what happened as a result.

  4. Focus experience on achievements

Start bullet points with actions such as improved, delivered, supported, created or managed. Add honest numbers and outcomes where possible.

  5. Add relevant education and training

Include qualifications, certificates and training that support the role. Give the most space to the most relevant information.

  6. Complete a final accuracy check

Check spelling, dates, contact details, links and unfinished placeholders. Read every statement and make sure you can explain and evidence it at interview.
